In a new study, researchers explored the synergistic analgesic effect of a preemptive combination of 400 mg of ibuprofen (IBU) and potassium fluoride 2% (KF2) in addressing tooth sensitivity following tooth bleaching.

The triple-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, involving 15 participants, utilized a crossover design for drug administration and a split-mouth design for the desensitizer agent.

The study created four paired groups to evaluate different interventions: IBU plus KF2 (IBU + KF2); IBU (IBU + placebo KF); KF2 (placebo IBU + KF2), and placebo (placebo IBU + placebo KF). Tooth sensitivity was assessed using a visual analog scale at various times: immediately after bleaching (baseline), and at 6, 30, and 54 hours.

Results from the analysis demonstrated that the combination of IBU plus KF2 was significantly more effective in reducing tooth sensitivity immediately after bleaching compared to the placebo group (P < .05). The relative risk of experiencing moderate or severe tooth sensitivity was approximately 4 times higher in the placebo group than in the IBU plus KF2 group (relative risk, 4.00; 95% CI, 1.01 to 15.81; P = .025).

The authors conclude that the preemptive administration of 400 mg of IBU in conjunction with KF2 offers a superior analgesic effect in managing postbleaching tooth sensitivity compared to a placebo. This revelation marks a significant stride in addressing a common concern among patients undergoing tooth whitening procedures.

Practical Implications for Dentists

Dental practitioners should consider combining IBU and KF2 as an effective strategy to alleviate postbleaching tooth sensitivity. The study’s findings emphasize the potential benefits of this preemptive approach, providing a valuable addition to the armamentarium of dentists involved in cosmetic dentistry.

The clinical trial, meticulously conducted, has been registered in the Brazilian Clinical Trials Registry Platform with the registration number U1111-1249-8191. This adds credibility to the study and facilitates further research and discussion within the dental community.

In conclusion, this research offers a promising solution to a longstanding issue in tooth whitening procedures. The preemptive administration of IBU plus KF2 showcases a remarkable analgesic effect, providing dental practitioners with a valuable tool for enhancing patient comfort and satisfaction during and after tooth bleaching sessions.
