SRINAGAR: In an extraordinary act of dedication, Dr. Sameer Maqbool, a dental surgeon at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) Pohru, saved a critically ill child by driving an ambulance to a specialized hospital. This remarkable event unfolded early Tuesday morning when a family arrived at PHC Pohru seeking urgent care for their child, who was in severe distress.

With the regular ambulance driver suddenly falling ill, Dr. Maqbool quickly stepped in, demonstrating exceptional resourcefulness and courage. Despite his primary role as a dental surgeon, he took the wheel to ensure the child received timely medical attention.

“I was in my chamber when I heard cries in the corridor and upon confirmation, I came to know a child with a fall history and vomiting needed immediate referral. The regular driver was unwell and was on an IV line. Without wasting any time, I drove the ambulance to a nearby specialised hospital,” Dr. Maqbool recounted.

Navigating through challenging traffic conditions, Dr. Maqbool maintained his composure and focus, ensuring a safe and swift journey to the advanced medical center. Upon arrival, the pediatric team promptly began treatment, stabilizing the child’s condition.

Reflecting on his actions, Dr. Maqbool stated, “In moments like these, every second counts. I did what any healthcare professional would do — prioritize the patient’s life above all else. I am just grateful that the child is now safe and recovering.”

The Directorate of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK) lauded Dr. Maqbool’s selflessness on its official Twitter handle: “Dr Sameer Maqbool, Dental Surgeon at PHC Pohru, went above and beyond the call of duty when a child needed urgent care. With the ambulance driver ill, he drove the ambulance himself to save a life.”

Dr. Mir Mushtaq of DHS-K praised Dr. Maqbool on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting his quick thinking and selflessness. Syed Abid Rasheed Shah, Secretary of Health and Medical Education J&K, also commended the act, tweeting, “Commendable job Dr Sameer.”

The local community has expressed immense gratitude and admiration for Dr. Maqbool’s bravery and dedication. Ejaz Ahmad, a local resident, remarked, “Dr. Maqbool’s actions exemplify the true spirit of healthcare professionals who go beyond their call of duty to save lives. His heroism is an inspiration to us all.”

While Dr. Maqbool’s selfless act has garnered widespread appreciation and gratitude on social media, it has also raised questions about the healthcare system’s preparedness, particularly the availability of backup personnel during emergencies.
