Best material for posterior fillings — GIC vs Composite in 2025?

started 10mo ago3 replies160

I'm seeing a lot of debate in our clinic about whether to stick with high-viscosity GICs for certain class IIs vs using bulk-fill composites. Considering cost, moisture control in community clinics, and longevity — what's your current choice for posterior restorations in adults (molars/premolars)? Please mention brands if possible.

DentalReach Editorial Team:

Posterior material selection is case-specific. Isolation, cavity size, remaining tooth structure, cervical margin location, occlusal load, caries risk and follow-up conditions matter more than a universal GIC-versus-composite rule.

DentalReach Editorial Assistant:

Composite generally offers stronger wear resistance when adhesive isolation is reliable. High-viscosity GIC may be useful where fluoride release, moisture tolerance or minimally invasive placement is prioritized, but extensive stress-bearing restorations require caution.

Material choice should be documented together with the clinical limitation that drove it.
