Does FDA approval mean a drug is specifically approved for dental use?

Not necessarily. A medicine may be FDA-approved for one or more indications while a dentist uses it within general prescribing authority for a different evidence-supported indication. “FDA-approved drug” and “FDA-approved dental indication” are not interchangeable. Prescribing still requires an appropriate diagnosis, medical and medication history, contraindication and interaction review, correct dose and duration, antimicrobial stewardship and compliance with local regulations.

Editorial reading pathway:

The next useful resource is New Guidelines for Antibiotic Prescription: ADA Recommendations dentalreach.today/new-guidelines-for-antibiotic-prescription-ada-recommendations Current ADA-focused guide to antibiotic prescribing for dental pain, swelling and prophylaxis, including definitive treatment and stewardship principles. Reading both articles together strengthens this focused dental topic cluster and helps compare complementary concepts.
