The oral cavity is considered to be the gateway for most of the diseases affecting different systems in a human body. An oral rinse when used provides protection from harmful oral pathogens which can affect the systemic health of an individual. An unhealthy oral cavity serve as a reservoir for plenty of microorganisms especially associated with gingival diseases. Few disadvantages and cautions of a mouthwash
- Over usage or inappropriate use of a mouthwash may lead to burning of the oral mucosa due to strong alcohol content and staining of the teeth, especially with chlorhexidine gluconate oral rinse
- When used with children, care must be taken to grant usage of mouthwash for children older than six years of age. There are instances of ingesting mouthwash with young children causing serious convulsions
- Mouthwash shouldn’t be considered as a substitute for brushing and/or flossing, it only serves as an oral aid to in clearing food debris and microorganisms
