A new light-curable injectable material, OdneFill (Switzerland), is showing promise as an effective alternative for root canal obturation. Root canal treatment relies on thorough cleaning and filling of the canal to prevent reinfection, but residual bacteria can still pose a challenge. Traditional techniques use gutta-percha and sealer, requiring precise canal preparation for a proper fit. OdneFill aims to simplify this process while offering comparable or even superior performance.

Researchers assessed OdneFill alongside two established root canal sealers, AH Plus and BioRoot RCS, to evaluate their physical, chemical, and antimicrobial properties. The materials underwent analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy after exposure to common irrigants like chlorhexidine and sodium hypochlorite. Several key characteristics, including flow, film thickness, radiopacity, solubility, and contact angle, were measured. To test stability, the materials were exposed to bacterial enzymes, and their resistance to microbial degradation was assessed.

One of the critical aspects of the study involved testing OdneFill’s interaction with a multispecies biofilm containing Streptococcus mutans, Enterococcus faecalis, Fusobacterium nucleatum, and Veillonella dispar. Using live/dead staining and confocal microscopy, researchers observed bacterial viability in direct contact with the materials. OdneFill demonstrated a stronger antimicrobial effect than AH Plus and maintained its stability even when exposed to bacterial enzymes and irrigants.

Structurally, OdneFill consists of an organic matrix with zirconium oxide filler. It displayed similar physical properties to AH Plus and BioRoot RCS, confirming its potential as a reliable root canal-filling material. The material’s injectable nature and light-curable formulation could offer a more convenient alternative to traditional obturation methods, potentially improving efficiency and clinical outcomes.

Given these promising results, OdneFill is emerging as an innovative addition to endodontic materials. While further clinical studies are needed to validate its long-term effectiveness, early findings suggest it could offer a significant advancement in root canal therapy, reducing procedural complexity while maintaining high success rates.
