Safe elevator use depends on controlled force, correct instrument selection, secure finger support, clear visualisation and an appropriate purchase point. Adjacent teeth should not be used casually as fulcrums. The clinician must understand root morphology, surrounding bone and nearby anatomical structures, and should stop when resistance suggests that sectioning, bone removal or a different approach is safer than increasing force.
