Abstract

This edition brings together six topics that reflect the many forces influencing modern dentistry. From social media and professional visibility to preclinical education, implant training, adhesive dentistry, teamwork, and international events, each article highlights an important part of the dental profession today.

Editorial by Dr Nupur Shrirao for Volume 6, Issue 7

Dentistry is changing faster than ever. This issue is focusing on important aspects like marketing, pre-clinical trainings, adhesive concepts, inter-departmental collaborations and global conferences. Let us have an overview of this month's issue!

Likes, followers, and smiles

Social media has become a powerful part of dental communication. Dental professionals use platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Facebook to share clinical knowledge, educate patients, build professional networks, and develop their personal brands.

However, digital visibility must be supported by accuracy, ethics, and professionalism. A successful online presence is not only about gaining likes and followers. It is also about building trust, protecting patient privacy, presenting evidence-based information, and communicating in a responsible manner.

The growing influence of social media shows that dentistry now extends beyond the clinic. Every post, video, and discussion can shape public understanding of oral health and influence how patients perceive dental care.

The value of preclinical training

Strong clinical skills begin with strong preclinical training. For undergraduate students, preclinical education provides the first opportunity to practise essential procedures in a controlled environment. It helps students develop hand skills, understand instruments and materials, and gain confidence before treating patients.

For postgraduate students, preclinical training has a more advanced role. It allows them to refine techniques, test new approaches, and improve their understanding of complex procedures. It also creates a safe space for learning from mistakes before applying these skills in clinical practice.

Effective preclinical education should combine demonstrations, supervised practice, feedback, and regular assessment. When students receive structured guidance, they are better prepared to make sound clinical decisions and deliver predictable patient care.

Choosing the right implantology course

Implantology requires more than theoretical knowledge. It demands a clear understanding of diagnosis, treatment planning, surgical protocols, prosthetic rehabilitation, maintenance, and the management of complications.

A good implant course should offer a balanced learning experience. Participants should look for experienced faculty, evidence-based teaching, hands-on training, appropriate patient exposure, and opportunities to work with modern diagnostic and surgical tools. The course should also explain case selection and risk assessment, rather than focusing only on implant placement.

Preclinical training is particularly important in implantology. It helps learners understand surgical anatomy, implant positioning, drilling protocols, suturing, prosthetic components, and the importance of precision. The right course should build competence gradually and encourage lifelong learning.

Immediate dentin sealing and the future of adhesive dentistry

Immediate dentin sealing has gained attention as a contemporary approach in indirect restorative dentistry. The technique involves applying an adhesive system to freshly prepared dentin before impression-making or scanning and provisionalisation.

When performed correctly, immediate dentin sealing may improve the bond between dentin and the definitive restoration. It may also help protect exposed dentin and reduce the risk of postoperative sensitivity. The technique reflects a broader movement in restorative dentistry towards more conservative preparations, improved adhesion, and better patient comfort.

As with every clinical procedure, success depends on case selection, isolation, material selection, and adherence to the correct protocol. Continued education is essential because adhesive systems and restorative materials continue to develop.

The importance of inter-departmental relationships

Modern dentistry is increasingly collaborative. Complex cases often require input from multiple departments, including conservative dentistry, prosthodontics, periodontics, oral surgery, orthodontics, radiology, and oral medicine.

Strong interdepartmental relationships improve diagnosis, treatment planning, communication, and patient outcomes. They also create valuable opportunities for students, residents, and faculty members to learn from different perspectives.

Collaboration should be built on mutual respect, clear communication, shared responsibility, and a common focus on patient welfare. When departments work together, dentistry becomes more coordinated, efficient, and comprehensive.

Looking ahead to FDI 2026

The FDI World Dental Congress 2026 will take place in Prague, Czech Republic, from 4 to 7 September 2026. The event will bring together dental professionals, researchers, students, industry representatives, and members of the wider dental team for education, collaboration, networking, and professional development.

The congress is expected to provide a valuable platform for exploring advances in oral healthcare, continuing education, interactive scientific sessions, and developments presented through the dental exhibition. FDI has described the event as an opportunity to discover future-focused ideas and connect with the international dental community. (fdiworlddental.org)

For young dentists and students, events such as FDI 2026 can offer more than lectures. They can support mentoring, career development, research exposure, professional networking, and a broader understanding of dentistry across different countries and healthcare systems.

Conclusions

The articles in this edition share one central message: progress in dentistry depends on continuous learning and meaningful connection. Digital platforms can improve communication. Pre-clinical training can strengthen clinical confidence. Implantology education can promote safer treatment. Adhesive techniques can enhance restorative outcomes. Interdepartmental collaboration can improve patient care, and global events can inspire new ideas. Dentistry is not defined by one technique, one technology, or one professional role. It is a constantly evolving discipline built on science, skill, communication, and compassion. As the profession continues to move forward, dental professionals must remain curious, ethical, collaborative, and prepared to adapt. The future of dentistry will belong to those who combine clinical excellence with a commitment to learning and serving patients better.
