Is the GV Black classification still clinically relevant in modern restorative dentistry?

ArticleGV Black Classification: Understanding the Foundations of Cavity ClassificationOpen

The GV Black classification remains useful for describing the anatomical location of cavitated lesions and for teaching operative dentistry. However, it does not describe lesion activity, severity or biological caries risk, so contemporary diagnosis should also consider systems such as ICDAS, radiographic findings and patient-level risk assessment. Clinicians should use GV Black as an anatomical classification rather than as a complete modern caries-management system.
