Dental Implant Procedure

1. Treatment planning: the implant position is planned from the intended crown backward so that function, cleansability and aesthetics guide surgery.
2. Site preparation: active infection and periodontal disease are managed. Some patients require extraction, socket preservation or bone augmentation before or during implant placement.
3. Implant placement: under local anaesthesia, an osteotomy is prepared and the implant is inserted. Primary stability, tissue condition and the treatment plan determine whether a healing cap, temporary tooth or submerged healing approach is used.
4. Healing and osseointegration: bone remodels around the implant over time. Healing duration varies with the site, bone quality, augmentation and patient risk factors.
5. Restoration: an impression or digital scan records the implant position. An abutment and crown, bridge or overdenture are then designed and fitted.
6. Maintenance: professional review and effective daily plaque control continue for the life of the restoration.

Who may need additional assessment?

Uncontrolled periodontal disease, poorly controlled diabetes, heavy smoking, inadequate bone, parafunction and some medications may increase complexity or complication risk. These factors do not automatically exclude treatment, but they require individualized risk assessment and informed consent.

Benefits, limitations and possible complications

Implants can restore function without preparing adjacent teeth and may support fixed or removable prostheses. They are not maintenance-free. Early failure, infection, nerve or sinus complications, prosthetic problems and peri-implant disease can occur. Patients should receive a personalized explanation of alternatives, costs, healing time and long-term maintenance before proceeding.
