The FDI World Dental Federation (FDI) has announced its plans for a virtual summit on Sustainability in Dentistry, scheduled to take place on June 5, World Environment Day. This summit aims to showcase captivating case studies, innovative ideas, and research projects focused on reducing the environmental impact of dentistry. Participants can expect a virtual display of poster abstracts and a bursary fund specifically designed for attendees from low-income countries.
The Sustainability in Dentistry initiative, launched in 2021, has brought together key stakeholders committed to implementing sustainable solutions for a greener future and improving the environmental impact of dentistry. This collaboration includes industry leaders, health professionals, academic experts, legislative authorities, and dental associations. Over 265 dental practices have registered for the Sustainability toolkit, demonstrating their commitment to sustainable practices. Additionally, 125 stakeholders from the oral healthcare supply chain have signed the Pledge for Sustainable Dentistry, showcasing their dedication to this cause.
In the new phase of the project, Dentsply Sirona, Haleon, Sunstar, Colgate, and SDI Limited will provide support to dental professionals by offering valuable educational tools and resources. These resources aim to empower dental professionals to make a positive impact on the environment and society.
The summit will be an opportunity for dental professionals and stakeholders to join the collective effort to improve the environmental impact of the dental profession on the planet. Prof Ihsane Ben Yahya, FDI President, expressed excitement for the event and the progress made through the Sustainability in Dentistry initiative. The Consensus Statement on Environmentally Sustainable Oral Healthcare, developed through this initiative, has been a significant achievement in advancing sustainability in dentistry.
Companies such as Dentsply Sirona and Haleon have emphasized their commitment to sustainability and their dedication to creating a more sustainable future in the dental industry. They believe that the Consensus Statement provides the clarity needed to drive purposeful and impactful change.
Dental professionals and stakeholders are encouraged to register and participate in the Sustainability in Dentistry Summit on June 5, 2023, to contribute to the ongoing efforts to improve the environmental impact of the dental profession.
