RAWALPINDI: On June 12, 2023, the Margalla Institute of Health Sciences (MIHS) hosted a seminar on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning in dentistry. The guest speaker for the event was Ms Umaima Khurshid Ahmad, a data science expert who shed light on the significant impact of AI tools in dental practice.
During the seminar, Ms Umaima highlighted how AI encompasses the ability of machines to perform tasks that would traditionally require human intelligence. She explained that advancements in big data, computational power, and AI algorithms have led to the development of various AI applications aimed at enhancing people's lives.
Ms Umaima emphasised the adoption of AI in different areas of dentistry, including operative dentistry, periodontics, orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and prosthodontics. Among the many applications of AI in dentistry, diagnosis and treatment planning are particularly popular.
The audience gained insights into various AI applications, such as predictive analytics, virtual consultations, Tele-dentistry, and platforms like "Overjet." These tools are helping oral health professionals to improve the lives of people by facilitating their work in dental care.
Predictive analytics is an AI application that uses data from a patient’s medical history, lifestyle, and other factors to predict the likelihood of developing certain dental conditions. This enables dentists to take proactive measures to prevent dental problems before they occur. Virtual consultations are also becoming increasingly common, with patients seeking online consultations for minor dental issues.
Tele-dentistry is another AI application that allows patients to access dental care remotely. It uses video conferencing technology to connect patients with dental professionals, enabling them to receive advice and treatment from the comfort of their own homes. Platforms like "Overjet" are also gaining popularity among dental professionals, assisting in the diagnosis and treatment planning processes.
The seminar also provided an opportunity for participants to address their queries. The engaging session concluded with Prof Dr Amjad Mahmood, Principal and Dean of Margalla College of Dentistry (MDC), presenting Ms Umaima with a shield as a token of gratitude for sharing her valuable insights on AI in dentistry.
