Residual ridge resorption is multifactorial. Mandibular resorption is often clinically more pronounced because the denture-bearing area is smaller, functional forces may be concentrated over a reduced surface, and anatomical and biomechanical conditions differ from the maxilla. The rate varies considerably between patients and is influenced by local anatomy, systemic factors, prosthesis design and loading.
