The Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) in New Delhi has been recognized by the FDI World Dental Federation for its outstanding “Best Community Engagement Campaign” during the World Oral Health Day Awards 2024, held at the World Dental Congress 2024 in Istanbul. This prestigious award, presented by Prof. Nikolai Sharkov, the FDI President-elect, and Dentsply Sirona, is a testament to the institute’s tireless efforts in serving the community.

Historic Achievement for India

This marks a significant milestone as MAIDS is the first dental college in India to receive this prestigious award, highlighting the institute’s commitment to promoting oral health awareness and providing accessible dental services to underserved populations.

Comprehensive Community Outreach

The Department of Public Health Dentistry at MAIDS plays a crucial role in reaching out to far-flung underserved populations in the city. It provides preventive, promotive, and curative services through a variety of community outreach activities, primarily via its satellite clinics and mobile dental clinics. The department has significantly expanded its scope of services and is actively involved in:

  • Tobacco Cessation: Running a dedicated clinic to help individuals quit tobacco use.
  • Preventive Oral Health Care: Engaging in innovative health education programs aimed at preventing dental diseases from their initial stages.
  • Awareness Campaigns: Conducting free oral health examinations and creating awareness in outdoor settings on a nearly daily basis.

A fleet of six mobile dental clinics operates under the aegis of the National Health Mission, extending services to various districts of Delhi and collaborating with multiple satellite and school centers. Special efforts are made to target vulnerable groups, including hearing-impaired children and juveniles in observation homes.Additionally, the department implements a school pit and fissure sealant program under the National Oral Health Program, marking another milestone toward preventing dental decay in community settings.

The department also includes Dr. Aswini Y Balappanavar, both of whom are committed to enhancing community health through their initiatives. This achievement not only elevates the profile of MAIDS but also sets an example for other dental institutions in India to actively engage in community outreach initiatives, furthering the mission of improving oral health for all.
