Dental Implants
A dental implant is a screw-shaped fixture, usually titanium or a titanium alloy, placed into the jawbone to take the place of the root of a missing tooth. Bone grows against its surface over the following months — osseointegration — after which an abutment and a crown, bridge or denture are attached to it. Treatment involves assessment of bone volume and soft tissue, sometimes a graft or a sinus procedure, the surgical placement itself, and a maintenance schedule afterwards. Suitability depends on bone quality, oral hygiene, smoking and the control of periodontal disease.
