First of all, let there be light! – Importance of light in Dental Microscope

The quality of illumination of working field depends on the type of lamp in the dental microscope.

They can be:

  • Halogen
  • Metal halide
  • Xenon and LED

Xenon and LED lamps will help ensure uniform illumination, the temperature is close to daylight, regardless of the degree of magnification.

In addition, their service life is longer than that of halogen ones.

Secondly, the degree of magnification in a dental microscope

The working part of dental microscope consists of lens and a set of lenses.

Switching between these lenses just changes the magnification.

The more lenses, the more the stages of magnification and more possibilities.

There are microscopes in which switching does not occur stepwise, rather smoothly — a smooth zoom.

This is much more convenient, because the magnification can be adjusted easily.

Thirdly, ergonomics and the possibility of personalized adjustment of the dental microscope

These factors directly depend on the focal length of the lens and the angle of the tube.

The most ergonomic is the focal length of 250 mm, however, the possibility of individual adjustment will be an advantage.

The same goes for the angle of inclination: a range of 0 to 210 degrees will provide better ergonomics.

An important criterion is documentation and the ability to connect third-party video and photo equipment.

Some models are equipped with integrated video cameras; however, the presence of an additional photo adapter will not be superfluous.

Dental operating microscopes are often equipped with yellow, green, or orange filters.

  • Yellow is used to adjust white balance and reduce the overall temperature of the picture.
  • The green filter allows you to neutralise the red color to better visualise hard tissues of the tooth and the vascular network of the mucosa.
  • The orange color of the filter reduces the cure rate of the composites.

There are different options for setting up microscopes

  • Floor mounted
  • Wall mounted
  • Ceiling mounted
  • Desktop mounted

In our opinion, the ceiling version is the most ergonomic.

Of course, if you have plans to use a microscope at several workstations, a mobile outdoor option if the better choice.

However, in practise and practically speaking, moving it between rooms can be difficult.

This review presents the most popular models of various manufacturers.

All microscopes are apochromatic.

Unlike achromats, they provide an accurate image and clearly convey colours.

Once again the key factors to consider when purchasing a dental microscope

  • Optical quality
  • Illumination
  • Workflow integration
  • Ergonomic design of the microscope
  • Supporting documentation, last but not the least
  • Maintenance and hygiene.

Conclusion – Dental Operating Microscope

For just about every dentist, natural visuals have their limits and they can only do so much. In such cases, dentists would only be partially able to fulfill given tasks at low level precision, which would not be satisfactory for both the dentist nor the patient.

To overcome these challenges, dentists need a high quality microscope that will not only enhance precision, but also minimise risks.

Only by using the right microscope can dentists benefit from excellent visualisation, ideal treatment ergonomics and see the quality of treatment increase significantly.
This ensures that the dentist does not gradually start experiencing back problems, fatigue from poor body posture & due to regular on chair practice and that the patient receives excellent care to have them recover within a short period of time and get back to their daily routines.

Therefore, it is safe to conclude that dental microscope have become invaluable tools in dentistry.
