Here are some simple contributor guidelines which may help you in providing appropriate content and increase your readability.
1. Know your audience
Never write to impress your audience or to prove your intelligence. It is important to know the attention span of your audience to formulate your content accordingly.
We have readers ranging from dental students to fresh clinicians to masters in the
field. Formulate content which is easy enough for students to understand but also fascinating enough for Masters audience to be interested.
- Research, research, research
There is one age old golden rule for a good writer, “You can only write what you know”. Thorough research on the chosen topic which will help you ground your article in fact. Make the habit of reading articles by fellow dentists as well. It will help you improve the quality of your writing and boost your creativity.
- Write simple
Don’t exaggerate your writing unnecessarily. The purpose of your article is to communicate and not to impress. Avoid fancy words where simpler words suffice.
- Be specific
Eliminate any point which is not related to the topic of your article. Organise your thoughts first about what all the points you want to include in your article. How important are your findings? Is there any point which may create confusion in your reader’s mind? If so, rephrase or reform the sentence.
Decide on a specific direction and move in the same direction while writing. If your article goes on and off in too many directions, you will lose the focus of your reader.
Don’t unnecessarily expand the chosen topic. If, for example, you are writing about oral cancer, focus on the same rather than first describing the precancerous lesions leading to oral cancer in detail.
- Employ short paragraphs and sentences
Shorter sentences are easier to read, comprehend, absorb. There is one simple rule, One sentence = One thought. Do not increase the complexity of sentence syntax by mixing two or more thoughts together.
- Avoid short forms and acronyms
Short forms and acronyms should be kept to a bare minimum, if used they must be explained or expanded once at the beginning of the article; e.g. World Health Organisation (WHO. Use short forms for units of measurements. It is better if you mention the concerned tooth in words as for example right upper first molar rather than 16.
- Be plagiarism free
Plagiarism is using the ideas or words of another author without properly citing the original author.
If you are rewriting someone else’s text in your own words, do it minimally and don’t forget to mention the original source in references.
Read, edit, reread until you are sure that the article is error free. Correct misplaced, misspelled words and grammatical errors. Your writing should be of professional quality. Make it your best so that your reader can focus more on the content rather than errors.
Rules when writing for DR
- You are solely responsible for the writings published under your name and expected to respond to all doubts/queries of the readers asked in the comment section.
- Each article should be between 1000 to 2000 words.
- Articles should have proper headings and subheadings which should be bold or highlighted appropriately.
- Articles must be uploaded on StoryChief.
- If you are publishing a case report, the confidentiality of the patient should be maintained and due permissions taken.
- Proper references are mandatory at the end of the article.
- Check for plagiarism on small tools like plagiarism checker before submitting the final article.
- If drug names are to be mentioned, mention generic names over brand names wherever possible.
- Article will be rejected if it doesn’t fit with above norms.
