Annamalai University announces the indefinite closure of medical and dental colleges. The move comes after the students protested demanding a reduction in fees.

Until further orders, Annamalai University ordered the suspension of classes for undergraduate students, except freshmen, and the indefinite closure of government medical and dentistry institutes in Chidambaram (formerly Rajah Muthiah Institute of Health Sciences).

Except for the MBBS and BDS freshers (2021-22) batch, all undergraduate students were advised to depart their respective hostels by 4 p.m.

Following student rallies calling for a fee decrease, the decision was made. The students have petitioned the government to quickly bring the fees in line with those charged by government institutions.

In a circular, University Registrar (in charge) K. Seetharaman stated that due to the adverse and unfavorable circumstances on the grounds of the Government Medical College, the University Registrar (in charge) K. Seetharaman has decided to close the College.

“The classes for MBBS and BDS freshers will be conducted as usual, and they will be permitted to stay in the hostel. Postings for the CRRIs of medical and dental colleges will continue, and they will also be permitted to stay in the hostel. The attendance of CRRIs will be mandatory’,” he said.

All other students were instructed to vacate the hostels immediately, he said, adding that unauthorized stay in the hostels and gatherings beyond 4 p.m. will be viewed seriously.
