Archana Karunakaran, a trained dentist, has seamlessly integrated her passion for art with her dental profession. Inspired by her visits to her mother’s village in Pollachi, Archana’s artwork reflects her deep connection with anatomy and human forms.
Graduating from Ragas Dental College in 2005 and completing her postgraduate studies at Government Dental College Chennai, Archana began her artistic journey during a six-month break after her postgraduate program. Despite a demanding schedule, including work as a periodontist and running her clinic, she dedicates three to four hours every morning to painting.
Her recent exhibition at CPR Art Centre in Chennai showcases a diverse collection of artwork created primarily after 2022. The lockdown period provided her with the opportunity to experiment with different media, further enhancing her artistic skills.
Archana’s artwork is characterized by bold strokes, vibrant colors, and a deep exploration of human emotions. Inspired by her surroundings and cultural heritage, she meticulously portrays everyday scenes and traditional subjects with a contemporary twist.
Of particular note are her Black and White series, featuring line art depicting human emotions, and her Rainbow series, which offers colorful renditions of traditional subjects. One standout piece from her exhibition is a grand portrayal of “Ponniyin Selvan,” a classic Tamil literary work, showcasing Archana’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage through her art.
As Archana continues to explore new stories and themes through her artwork, she aims to leave behind a legacy that celebrates culture, tradition, and the timeless beauty of human expression.
The exhibition at CPR Art Centre is a testament to Archana’s multifaceted talent and her ability to seamlessly blend her dental expertise with her passion for art.
